Carpe Diem…Before It Melts!

The boys headed out to play in the snow right after breakfast. I guess both were still hungry as the first thing they did was eat it:   They ran all over the yard, making tracks and listening to the snow squish underfoot (very different than the dry powdery snow we get in winter): And then, no surprise, out came the dinosaurs. The boys fashioned asteroids and kept wiping the dinos out. :-) While they were playing, I called around to let everyone know soccer is...

Start of Soccer Season

Both boys had their first community soccer tonight—the kids do drills and running for 20 minutes or so, have a snack and water break, and then play a half-hour game. It’s all low-key and fun. Daegan has played previously, but this is Gareth’s first go at the sport—and he kept his asthma in check without the inhaler! Yippee!  Our neighbour’s little girl is on the same team as Gareth, and Daegan is thrilled his team is his favourite colour: blue. It looks like it will be a fun next 8 weeks. Here’s way too many pics <g>. Was an...

Playground fun

Took the boys down to Edworthy Park in the river valley this afternoon. There’s a great playground (one of 4 in the park, actually), and a paved path between parking lot and bathrooms that is perfect for bike riding. (The boys did not want to take off their bike helmets, going back and forth between playground and bikes.) The boys ran around doing all kinds of things, playing with other kids…was so good to be back outside in the sunshine. Here’s some pics: ...

Jim broke his wrist!

After such a lovely Friday, Sunday has been rather a let down. I am getting sick, and Gareth is sick—complete with up-chucking all over his bedsheets. So, to make the best of things, Jim and I thought this would be a good chance for some one-on-one time between him and Daegan. And as Daegan is always wanting to skate for a longer time than Gareth, and it was a nice sunny day, this seemed a good way to spend the late afternoon. But less than an hour later, Jim and Daegan returned. As it was getting close to dinner,...

An Afternoon on Ice, or How Gareth Snagged free Skating Lessons

Jim took the boys skating at Westside recreation centre this afternoon. Last winter Jim and Daegan did a half-dozen or so skating classes, but this was Gareth’s first time on skates. Westside is a lovely facility, with different ice areas and fire pits to warm up. And in between the areas are lots of benches and rest areas. I didn’t go along (craving alone time to do such exciting things as fold laundry and take the dog for a walk in the bitter cold), but here’s the story as the boys and Jim told me. They got there, and...

Playing in the snow…finally!

It’s been an unusually snowy—and COLD—last month in Calgary, but today was quite mild, so I sent the boys outside to play. Here’s Daegan pulling Gareth on a baby toboggan (which he barely fits!): Here’s the boys playing in the snow. You can see how mild it is: the ice in the birdbath is melting (yes, I know, getting a heated birdbath is on the list! <g>) When I saw both boys out there on sleds, I got a “brilliant” idea (cough, hack, wheeze). I thought,...
